Tuscan Flavours in the Heart of Small-Town Patagonia – Puerto Varas

Just outside the north entrance of Puerto Varas, nestled on a hillside overlooking Lago Llanquihue, lies Mercato Contadino—a little slice of Tuscany in Patagonia. Chickens roam freely, dogs lounge on the veranda, and a cat naps on vintage patio furniture. Light jazz drifts from the kitchen of a rustic country home, while the irresistible aroma of fresh pasta and garlic fills the air.

Pia’s Journey from Santiago to Tuscany

A few years ago, Pia Giangrandi, a Santiago native and media studies graduate, found herself at a crossroads. Unsure of her path, she followed her Italian roots to Tuscany, where she trained at the International Chef Academy. Returning to Chile, armed with new skills and entrepreneurial spirit, Pia began selling fresh pasta and sauces from her home in Puerto Varas. Her venture quickly grew, transforming her parents’ traditional southern Chilean home into a charming Tuscan trattoria.

Market-Fresh to Table Dining Experience

At Mercato Contadino, Pia prepares homemade pasta and sauces, often chatting with guests from her open kitchen as she rolls gnocchi or portions ravioli. The daily menu is inspired by local market produce, offering an authentic market-to-table experience. While the unpredictable Patagonian weather means most dining is indoors, the cozy atmosphere is filled with charming vintage decor. On sunny days, however, dining al fresco on the veranda is a treat, transporting you straight to Italy with a glass of sangria and fresh crostini.

Events and Special Occasions

Mercato Contadino also hosts special events like weddings, parties, and corporate gatherings. Or, simply stop by to enjoy the peaceful setting and unwind.

More Than a Trattoria

Upstairs, Mercato Contadino offers unique office rentals, meeting spaces, and artistic workshops, with a constant rotation of creative projects. Stay updated on their latest endeavors by following them on Instagram: @mercato_contadino.
