Where Italian culinary traditions meet the charm of southern Chile, Mercato Contadino remains one of Puerto Varas’s best-kept secrets.

After far too long, I’m happy to be catching up with its creator, Pia Giangrandi, and her talented team.

Pia’s Kitchen

As always, I find Pia at her station, portioning perfect parcels of ravioli while chatting with clientele from the open kitchen.

Every Day is Different

“There’s no menu,” I overhear her respond. “I never know what I’m going to cook. I always decide after seeing what I find at the market and what I have at hand,” she says with a smile. “So, every day is different.”

“No hay menú,” la escucho contestar. “Nunca sé qué voy a cocinar. Esto siempre lo decido después de ver lo que encuentro en el mercado y lo que tengo a mano,” dice sonriendo. “Entonces, cada día es diferente.”

Mercato’s Story

A few years ago, Pia returned from Italy, brimming with Tuscan pasta recipes and inspiration. From this treasure trove of culinary secrets, Mercato Contadino was born. After a successful two years, Pia has just teamed up with her sister, a skilled pastry chef. As a result, Mercato now offers an enticing selection of desserts and sweets to complement its authentic array of freshly made Tuscan pastas.

Pasta of the Day

The day’s menu featured ravioli filled with lentils, minced meat, and parmesan and served with a tasty grilled tomato sauce. All deliciously followed by a perfectly crafted tiramisu—rich, creamy, and utterly satisfying.

Italian Oasis

Despite the slightly overcast skies, the cozy vintage furniture on the verandah and charming décor were beckoning—especially since I’d be accompanied by a lazy tabby cat and a precocious fox terrier. All in keeping with the experience of course.

It’s in the Atmosphere

It’s the atmosphere that makes Mercato Contadino so special: comfortable, unfussy, and relaxing. It’s perfect for any occasion—from family gatherings to office meetings. Or just escape the day-to-day and indulge in something delightful.

Visit

You’ll find Mercato Contadino at Villa El Trébol, just off Calle Gramado at the northern entrance to Puerto Varas. Follow Pia on Instagram @mercato_contadino for updates on daily menus, watercolor workshops, frozen pasta options, and takeaways, renting office space at Mercato and more.
